Pivotals drives Sensex higher, gaining 216 pts

Mumbai: The benchmark Sensex surged over 216 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange at noon today, a biggest intra-day gain in more than a month, spurred by aggressive buying in major stocks like Infosys, Maruti and SBI.

The Sensex, which commenced higher, gained further momentum on emergence of buying by funds and placed higher by 216.58 points at 11,877.37 at 1200 hrs.

In similar fashion, the second wide-based National Stock Exchange index, Nifty, shot up by 64.92 points at 3454.82 as all the 50 index scrips remained higher.

Major support came in from counters like Larsen and Toubro, BHEL, Bajaj Auto, Infosys, Tata Motors, Maruti Udyog and State Bank of India by gaining significant ground on brisk buying by foreign and domestic funds.
