Sensex fails to hold early gains, down 200 points

Mumbai: The benchmark Sensex failed to hold early gains and lost about 200 points at early trading at the Bombay Stock Exchange today (May 24, 2006) on profit-selling by funds and retail investors.

The BSE 30-share index which rose to 10,898.17 points at the outset, rolled back on emergence of selling, placing it lower by 199.94 points at 10,622.84 points in first five minutes of trading.

Similarly, the Nifty index on the National Stock Exchange lost 68.50 points at 3130.85 points after rising to 3235.20 points.

The major losers were Bajaj Auto, Grasim Industries, HDFC, ONGC, BHEL, Reliance Industries, Tata Consultancy, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Infosys Technologies, Larsen and Toubro, Bharti Airtel and Ranbaxy Lab.
