The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) bellwether index (Sensex) today (Mar 29, 2006) touched yet another all-time high of 11,157.75, following hectic buying by funds as well as
short covering by operators.
The BSE-30 share sensitive index opened remarkably higher at 11,103.87 points as against yesterday's close of 11,086.03 points and rallied further to a new peak of 11,157.75 before
being quoted at 11,133.01 at 10:30 a.m., showing a rise of 46.98 points.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued to give support to select blue-chip counters and injected more than Rs 5,000 crore in the current month so far while domestic mutual funds also went on buying spree after collecting more than Rs 17,000 crore from various units scheme.
Cautious operators and retail investors also joined the buying bandwagon and even covered short positions ahead of the expiry of March derivatives contracts tomorrow, aiding the firm trend.
Expecting smart rise in bottomline in most of the companies for Q4, to be announced in the next month also aided the firm trend, dealers said.
