Industrial growth sours to 8.3 per cent in January

New Delhi: Indian Industry grew by 8.3 per cent in January this year compared to 7.5 per cent a year ago mainly due to the higher growth in manufacturing.

Index of industrial production for April-January this fiscal shows a growth of 8 per cent compared to 8.4 during the same period last fiscal.

Manufacturing sector powered 9.2 per cent growth in January this year compared to 8.6 per cent a year ago.

During the first 10 months, the manufacturing sector logged an impressive nine per cent growth this fiscal which was slightly lower than 9.2 per cent clocked during the same period last fiscal.

Electricity generation grew by 5.8 per cent in January 2006 compared to 2.4 per cent growth in the year-ago period.

The sector grew by 4.9 per cent during April-January 2005-06 compared to 6 per cent in the same period last year.

Mining activities remained sluggish and grew by only 0.2 per cent in January 2006 compared to 2.6 per cent a year ago.

The sector grew by 0.5 per cent in the first 10 months of 2005-06 compared to 4.8 per cent in the year ago period.
