FM seeks Left cooperation for FDI liberalisation
Monday, January 9 2006 09:43 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Chennai: Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram yesterday (Jan 08, 2006) sought Left parties' support for the government's FDI liberalisation in select sectors citing China's success in the field.

Delivering the valedictory address at the four day Multi Media Campaign, organised by several departments of the Centre, he said China had permitted FDI in vital sectors, which had enabled it to develop its economy at a faster growth rate.

China had also adopted a liberalised economic policy, Chidambaram said.

The Left parties should co-operate with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and support the policy of FDI in select sectors, instead of opposing it, he said.

He was replying to charges made by CITU leader T K Rengarajan, who spoke earlier at the meeting.

Rengarajan said the UPA government, which had majority in the Lok Sabha, should not go ahead with allowing FDI mindlessly.
