HP occupies No. 1 position in UNIX server market
Tuesday, December 6 2005 19:58 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Bangalore: Leading technology solutions provider Hewlett-Packard today (Dec 06, 2005) said it has occupied the No. 1 position in the UNIX server market in India.

The company, quoting the International Data Corporation (IDC) 3Q 2005 figures, announced its leadership position in the UNIX server market category capturing 37.8 per cent market share in customer revenues.

In the current quarter, HP has consolidated the No.1 position in high-end servers and mid-range server segments by securing market shares of 74.3 per cent and 42.6 per cent, respectively, in customer revenue terms, it said.

"For the last few years, Sun has been the No.1. For the first time, we have overtaken Sun, which is now in the second position", Pallab Talukdar, Country Manager, Enterprise Marketing and Alliances, Technology Solutions Group, HP, told reporters here.

In the overall server customer revenues, HP has grown by 83.6 per cent in 3Q05 compared to 3Q04, he said.

He attributed the company's growth to core banking roll-outs by public sector banks, new banking applications, 'explosive' telecom subscriber growth and scaling up of government IT projects, among others.

Talukdar said India continued to be the fastest growing server market in the Asia Pacific. The first nine months of the current financial year saw overall server units grow by 46.3 per cent and server revenues by 30 per cent.

"India is unique that all the three mainstream operating systems - Unix, Windows and Linux are growing healthily", he said. UNIX continued to be the dominant operating system in terms of revenue share (about 40 per cent).

HP also announced expansion of its portfolio of Integrity Servers based on Itanium Processor technology by introducing the first-ever blade server on Itanium running high end UNIX.
