The inauguration of the 13th Quality Summit organized by the Confederation of Indian Industries Institute of Quality was marked by the Commercial Vehicles Business Unit (CVBU) of Tata Motors, winning the prestigious CII-Exim Bank Award for Business Excellence 2005.
Having bagged this prestigious Award this year, it has joined the elite group of high performance organizations. The high standards set for this Award is seen from the fact that in the last 12 years, there have been only Four Winners and the last winner of this prestigious Award was in 2002, Infosys Technologies Ltd.
The Top leadership of this year's Award Winner - Tata Motors, has adopted the Business Excellence framework as the long-term strategy with clear vision to drive improvements throughout the organisation.
The leadership have recognized its people, suppliers and dealers as vital link in the transformation process and brought in improvements to management systems and processes to establish high performing and learning organization.
They, enhanced thrust on new product introductions with clear customer and society focus. The organization achieved outstanding performance and more than doubled its revenue and quadrupled its EVA in the last couple of years.
The Award process is very rigorous, supported by a pool of more than 250 qualified assessors drawn from senior business management professionals from industry. A team of qualified assessors assesses the applicant organization investing about 1000 man-hours for each applicant organization against the Business Excellence Model, developed by European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM).
The number of organizations embracing this framework, has increased five-fold in the last four years in view of the value add it provides. The number of organizations receiving recognitions, increased substantially this year compared to previous years, both from Public and Private sectors.
These organizations are from different business sectors covering engineering, energy, chemicals, ICT, Food etc. This indicates the steady progress being made by Indian organizations, in enhancing the competitiveness over the years.
Six organizations have been given recognition for 'Significant Achievement'; Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Haridwar & Tiruchirappalli units), Jay Bharat Maruti Ltd., New Delhi, JSW Steel, Bellary, Larsen & Toubro Ltd., ECC Division, Chennai, and National Capital Power Station, Dadri, NTPC and 32 organizations have been recognized for 'Strong Commitment to Excel'.
The illustrious list includes 5 units of Bharat Electronics, 3 units of BHEL, 6 units of NTPC, 3 units of Murugappa Group, 4 units of Tata Group, 3 units of Aditya Birla Group including 2 overseas units, Honeywell Technologies, Philips Software, Bharti Televentures, Kirloskar Copeland, Pata Unit of GAIL, Hazira Division of Reliance and 2 units of Hindustan Coca Cola.
