'Wipro does not need a CEO', says Azim Premji Friday, July 22 2005 17:38 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Bangalore:
As debate on succession plans of Wipro Chairman Azim Premji is on, the man at the helm of affairs at the Bangalore-headquartered, New York Stock Exchange Listed firm says the company does not need a CEO.
In response to a question on the new organisation structure and on whether the company would have a CEO, Premji said the issue is not relevant as, "We don't need a CEO".
"We have five CEOs (of different divisions) running the show. They are fully competent and capable of running the show", said 59-year-old Premji, who owns 84 per cent equity in Wipro.
Vivek Paul, who held the post of Wipro Vice-Chairman and CEO of Wipro Technologies, its flagship division, had resigned recently, Raman Roy, who headed the company's BPO business, quit some days earlier.
He denied reports in a section of the press that Paul left the company on a bitter note. "We are in finer terms", Premji said. "We have given our blessing to Paul".
Premji said Paul's contribution to the success of Wipro's global IT business has been significant, reflected in the company's lead position today in many areas.
Premji's son Rishad is a graduate from Harvard Business School and is reportedly set to join a consulting firm in London. Younger son Tariq works with Azim Premji Foundation mainly involved in primary education.
