Bush restores market access for Indian, Pak goods Thursday, June 30 2005 10:01 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Washington:
US President George W Bush has restored duty-free access to US markets for some goods from India and Pakistan, citing progress on intellectual property and worker rights, respectively.
In a proclamation released by the White House yesterday (Jun 29, 2005) the President said he was acting under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) trade rules and the US Trade Act of 1974.
"I have determined that India has made progress in providing adequate and effective protection of intellectual property rights. Accordingly, I have determined to terminate the suspension of India's duty-free treatment for certain articles under the GSP," he said.
"I have determined that Pakistan has taken or is taking steps to afford workers in that country internationally recognized worker rights," said Bush. "Accordingly, I have determined to restore Pakistan's eligibility for certain articles for preferential treatment under the GSP."
