Govt inquiring into call centre scam, says IT Secy
Wednesday, June 29 2005 17:56 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Government today (Jun 29, 2005) said it is looking into the issue of alleged leakage of data from a web marketing company employee to an undercover reporter of a UK daily in a sting operation and asserted that guilty would not be spared.

"We are finding out the truth.. The case is being looked into by us relating to the allegation of 'classified' data leakage. After inquiry if anybody is found guilty, existing law will take its own course. Nobody would be spared... But we would not do anything prematurely... Let the inquiry be over", Brijesh Kumar, Secretary, Information Technology department, told sources in New Delhi. When asked when the probe is likely to be over, he declined to give any time-frame.

Karan Bahree, an employee of the Gurgaon-based web marketing firm, was at the centre of a storm involving leakage of credit card information, after he admitted to handing over a CD to the reporter of the tabloid 'The Sun', but claimed he did not know that the information contained in the CD was classified.

His company Infinity e-Search, which has already sacked him in the wake of the controversy said Bahree, in his explanation letter, had said he was offered a job and $5,000 by the UK daily in return of a presentation information contained in a CD.

The Gurgaon Police is also looking into the case.
