'Young BPO staff in a culturally confused state'
Tuesday, June 7 2005 20:46 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Bangalore: A top business process outsourcing expert said today (Jun 7, 2005) with highly lucrative salaries, the younger lot in the BPO industry earning much more than what their parents earned at their age, they tend to be in a culturally confused state.

"There is a need to communicate the code of ethics to the younger generation joining the BPO industry, as well as educate them about the consequences of committing a fraud...," Chairman and CEO of Mphasis, Jerry Rao said.

Speaking at a session on 'security and data privacy: raising the bar' at the NASSCOM's India ITES-BPO strategy summit 2005 here, he said there is not enough training imparted in the areas of ethics and orientation for those in the BPO sector.

Referring to the Mphasis case when some of its employees had fraudulently transferred funds from the bank accounts of call centre customers, Rao said, "It was a case of social engineering - a technique of talking to people and getting out information from them."

"The people involved (in committing the fraud) worked on the whole thing for several months, obtained passwords from vulnerable customers and tried to hit their accounts from cyber cafes and phone booths," he said.

They opened fake accounts in their own names, transferred the money to these accounts and were caught in the process, Rao said.
