Wipro issued notice on 'illegal' disposal of e-waste Wednesday, June 1 2005 20:25 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Bangalore:
IT major Wipro Limited has been served a show-cause notice by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) for alleged illegal storing and disposal of electronic waste, KSPCB sources said.
Responding to the notice recently, the New York Stock Exchange-listed company headquartered in Bangalore said it has not violated any pollution control laws in Karnataka.
"We were not satisfied with their reply, and have sought clarifications, and Wipro has sought another 15 days to respond," a KSPCB official said on condition of anonymity.
KSPCB sources alleged that Wipro illegally stored e-waste in a godown, and disposed them off to a Tamil Nadu firm. Wipro had been asked to explain how it sent e-waste to this firm in 2004 when it had no permission.
A Wipro spokesperson, when contacted, confirmed that the company has received a show-cause notice regarding disposal of e-waste.
"We are in the process of replying. We have not violated any law regarding pollution control in Karnataka," she said.
