New IIT centre for Kerala soon says Oommen Chandy

Thiruvananthapuram: The Centre has agreed to consider the Kerala Government's request for establishing an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) centre in the State, Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy told the Assembly on Monday (March 28, 2005). Explaining the steps taken for the establishment of an IIT and a technical university in Thiruvananthapuram, he said the project report for IIT and a technical university would be ready soon.

The centre may either upgrade an existing education institution to the status of IIT or establish a new campus, he said.

The Government had already informed the Centre that it would make available the required land and also bear half of the establishment cost, he said.
