P&G's water purifying agent for tsunami-hit areas
Thursday, February 24 2005 10:34 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Washington: Pharmaceutical giant Proctor and Gamble's (P&G) cleaning agent for muddied water is becoming increasingly popular in the tsunami-hit areas with the company deciding to distribute the powder's packets free of cost.

The purifying powder 'Pur' was not popular before tsunami as people were not aware how to use it. P&G had accumulated a large stock of packets, which no one wanted after initial use on a small scale in Guatemala and Morocco, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Then came the tsunami and the company had to order extra shifts to manufacture more, the paper said.

How you can help Tsunami Victims

"The powder transforms contaminated water covered with muddy layers of dirt and debris into something safe to drink," the report said.

The reason it was not popular before the tsunami was that the packets of chlorine salt and iron sulphate are relatively complicated to mix. But in the tsunami-hit areas, people found that it worked like a miracle cleaning up dirty water, the paper said.

The company first sold the packets at a nominal cost but later decided to give away the packets free to tsunami victims.
