In an ambitious expansion plan countrywide, Reliance Infocomm has embarked on a programme to reach four lakh villages across the country, including 4,500 in Orissa, by the end of the current year (2005).
''The move is intended to bring about a new revolution in rural telephony,'' the company's CEO for Orissa, Chhatisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, Santanu Chakrabarty, said in Bhubaneshwar yesterday (Feb 17, 2005).

The massive operation, touching nearly 65 crore Indians, would cover nearly two-thirds of the villages and over 5,700 cities and towns. The expansion involving 8,500 Base Transreceiver Station (BTS) towers would also cover 91 per cent of the country's national highways and 85 per cent of the rail routes, he said.
The present initiative is expected to increase India's teledensity to ten per cent by the end of the year, Chakrabarty says.

In Orissa, the company had allotted 1325 km of Terabit Optic Fibre, which would cover all five major national highways, 54 State highways and 15 important rail routes.
The expansion would take the benefits of the telecom revolution to about one crore people in the State, he said.
