RIC denies political links in share distribution
Monday, February 14 2005 21:48 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: In the face of reports alleging political links in distribution of its shares amid the ongoing war between the Ambani brothers, Reliance Infocomm, headed by elder brother Mukesh, said today (Feb 14, 2005) that it had nothing to do with former Communication Minister Pramod Mahajan in sale of its equity at Rs One a share to some private companies in Delhi.

"The fiction relating to the alleged 'Mahajan link' is nothing but one of the several attempts to achieve the hidden agenda of these forces," RIC said in a statement nearly a fortnight after reports suggested that Mukesh Ambani - controlled company had given about one crore shares of the company to three companies having links with political personalities, including Mahajan.

"No politician or bureaucrat at any moment of time has held or holds any shares of RIC. This transaction has nothing to do with Pramod Mahajan and any insinuation to the contrary is totally mischievous and motivated."

The vicious propaganda campaign is being carried on against Reliance Infocomm for the last several weeks has now been re-orchestrated with the sinister objective of misleading the decision makers, Government organisation, and political parties," the statement said.

With this goal, articles and commentaries have been published which aimed to associate Mahajan with an ordinary business transaction of Reliance Infocomm with its business associate, it added.

"These malicious articles are attempt to show that one crore shares of RIC, India's most successful initiative in the information and communication sector, have been given for the benefit of Pramod Mahajan," the release added.

"Dubious forces" began the campaign by feeding disinformation to the media, the statement said, adding, as the facts began to become known the responsible section of the media saw through the "utter falsehood and innuendos peddled as facts by the organisers of this campaign."

However, a very small section of the media continues to indulge in falsehood and distortions in pursuit of its goals of maligning an Indian company which has set up new world records in its area of operation, it said.

"Vested interests have taken this tirade to a new mischievous pitch in the last two weeks," the statement added.
