Inflation falls to an eight-month low of 5.25 pc
Friday, February 11 2005 12:45 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Inflation shed another 0.12 per cent to tick to an eight month low of 5.25 per cent for the week ended January 29, despite costlier fruits and vegetables.

The point-to-point Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation fell from the previous week's 5.37 per cent mainly due to fall in the price of edible oils, while fuel prices remained firm, not withstanding the dip in global markets ahead of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) meeting.

The general price level was as high as 5.91 per cent in the previous year (2004) period.

The WPI went up by 0.1 per cent to 188.5 points due to an increase in the price of mass consumption primary items like vegetables and fruits, and manufactured products including sugar and salt. The WPI was 179.1 in the year-ago period.

Government revised upwards inflation to 7.07 per cent for the week ended December 4, 2004 instead of the provisional level of 7.02 per cent.

The final WPI stood corrected at 189.2 points during the first week of December as against the provisional figure of 189.1 points.
