No files missing from Reliance group records: RoC
Thursday, February 10 2005 16:38 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Mumbai: None of the files pertaining to the Reliance group is missing, the Registrar of Companies (RoC) has reported to the Union Government, thereby refuting one of the allegations floated against the group chairman Mukesh Ambani, currently involved in a bitter wrangle with younger brother Anil.

The communication follows directives from the Ministry of Company Affairs last month (January) to the RoC in Mumbai, asking it to give a status report on hundreds of documents of nearly three-dozen companies amid reports that the files were missing from the records.

Spotlight: Battle of Ambanis -- Will they stick or split?

In its communication sent earlier this month, the RoC, which has its office at Marine Drive, informed the Ministry of Company Affairs after a through inspection, "It is therefore categorically stated that no files are missing or any duplicate files are maintained by the office."

Referring to the Ministries' communication of January 25, a top official of RoC said in the reply, "I am to state that document files of 21 companies out of the list of 28 companies sent by the ministry are updated. There are about 104 documents to be restored in the document files of remaining seven companies and this office is in the process of putting the same in the concerned document files."

When contacted senior Ministry officials said that they had received complaints about some missing files on Reliance group of companies and some other related entities. The issue was looked into by the RoC and some officials of the Ministry and no lapse has been detected.

In the ongoing proxy war between the two Ambani brothers, Anil had met Company Affairs Minister Prem Chand Gupta and Secretary Komal Anand early last month.

According to sources the younger brother had raised the issue of corporate governance as well as that of missing files during his meeting with Gupta.

"However, no official complaint on the matter was given by Anil," official sources said.

The issue of missing files had arisen after media reports said that shareholders had written to the Company Affairs Ministry about widespread non-availability of records of various Reliance group affiliate companies.
