Friday, January 14 2005 17:10 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Bangalore: BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) is aiming to launch Internet access on mobile phones across the country in the next three months, while it will begin tests to provide third generation services on mobile soon, a top official said today (Jan 14, 2005).

"We have already placed orders for EDGE equipment that will enable Internet access on mobile phones. It should be operational in three months," BSNL director (Operations) S C Choudhary told reporters in Bangalore at the launch of DataOne, its broadband Internet service.

He said orders have been placed with Nokia, Nortel and Alcatel through state-run ITI for the equipment to provide EDGE services.

BSNL has also placed some equipment for providing third generation (3G) value added services on a limited scale for demonstrating the technology.
