Ambani tussle: Mukesh meets Sonia, Chidambaram

New Delhi: On his first visit to the capital ever since the tussle with his brother Anil came into the open, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani today (Dec 4, 2004) met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and is understood to have discussed the trouble in the Reliance empire.

Mukesh was also present at a meeting of industrialists and businessmen convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but it was not clear whether he had any discussion on the issue with him. He also called on Finance Minister P Chidambaram at his residence.

Spotlight: Battle of Ambanis

The brief meeting with Sonia Gandhi at her 10, Janpath residence, was described as a 'courtesy call' but there was no official comment on the nature of the meeting.

When contacted, RIL (Reliance Industry Ltd) spokesperson declined to comment on the purpose of Mukesh calling on Sonia and Finance Minister P Chidambaram. "No comments," he said when asked if the CMD had briefed the political leaders about the ongoing problems in the family.

On the other hand, Anil's camp said a categoric no when asked if the younger brother, an independent Rajya Sabha member backed by Samajwadi Party, had met any of the political leaders in the last fortnight after the media focus on the family problems.
