TI building single chip solution for mobiles in India
Wednesday, November 3 2004 14:25 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: American chipmaker Texas Instruments (TI) today (Nov 3, 2004) said engineers at its India R&D centre in Bangalore are developing a single chip solution for mobile phones.

"Large number of employees here are working on chip, systems and software on single chip cellphone in India," Texas Instruments India Managing Director Biswadip (Bobby) Mitra said at a conference on IT innovation in India at the ongoing Bangalore IT.COM.

Delivering his talk on "a peek into ubiquitous embedded world - systems, software and silicon", Mitra said engineers at TI India were integrating digital, analog, radio frequency, and modem into the single chip solution.

TI, which was the first multinational to set up base in Bangalore way back in 1984, has over 1,600 employees building solutions for TI's chips that are deployed in gadgets globally.

He said Sangam, the first single chip DSL modem, built in Bangalore two years ago, has successfully demonstrated that innovative products can be developed by engineers in India.

"Software increasingly is becoming a higher percentage of embedded systems. Besides, the value of silicon being important, but the value of software is increasing from 34 per cent to over 50 per cent in chips. That is an opportunity for both TI India and Indian IT industry," Mitra said.

He said that as chip sizes are getting smaller, it is increasing its power capability for more applications.
