Reliance reacts to DoTon call routing controversy Thursday, October 21 2004 10:25 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Mired in a controversy over the routing of incoming international calls as local calls to avoid payment of connectivity charges, Reliance Infocomm on Wednesday (Oct 20, 2004) sent a detailed, clause-by-clause reply to the Department of Telecom (DoT), saying there was no violation of the licence agreement.
When contacted, telecom secretary Nripendra Mishra confirmed that a reply from Reliance Infocomm had been received but declined to divulge the details.
The DOT had given a deadline till October 20 to the private telecom operator to explain as to why a penalty of Rs 50 crore should not be imposed on them for violation of the licensing terms and conditions by routing incoming international calls as local calls, due to which State-owned BSNL claimed to have lost about Rs 120 crore.
Last week, Reliance had paid Rs 58 crore to BSNL as an "interim arrangement".
BSNL had issued notices on 111 locations along with a bill of Rs 58 crore, sources said, adding that BSNL was further analysing the call data.
