Bangalore:
IT major Hewlett Packard today (Oct 4, 2004) posted 45 per cent jump in revenue at $ 16.2 million in the mid-range servers segment in India during the second quarter ended September while registering a 75.8 per cent jump in sales at 232 units.
Quoting market research firm IDC, HP said it has sold 232 units of mid-range servers in the second quarter, as against 132 units in the same period last year.
"We have displayed dominance in the mid-range server market in India in terms of units shipped and revenue in the second quarter," HP India director - Enterprise Marketing and Alliances, Customer Solutions Group, Pallab Talukdar told reporters in Bangalore.
He said some of its customers include ONGC, Bharat Petroleum, TVS Motors, BSNL and Idea Cellular, besides Bank of India and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance.
Talukdar quoting IDC said, the server market in second quarter grew by 27 per cent at $ 114.1 million as against $ 89.6 million in July to September 2003.
Talukdar said India was bucking the global trend in registering a growth in Unix, Windows and Linux operating systems, adding, "enterprises were adopting Linux a little cautiously and instead preferring Unix."
He said HP was replacing the Ittanium chips in its low-end "Proland" servers with 64 bit Xeon architecture chips.
"We do a shift from 32 bit to 64 bit architecture. In the next three months, our low end servers will be refurbished with 64 bit chips," Talukdar said.
