Inflation dips to 7.80 pc due to cheaper food items Friday, October 1 2004 14:27 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
After a marginal increase in the previous week, inflation dipped by 0.07 per cent to 7.80 per cent for the week ended September 18 mainly due to cheaper food items including vegetables and fruits.
The point-to-point Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation fell from the previous week's level of 7.87 per cent even as manufactured items including food products became costlier and it was 5.02 per cent in the year ago period.
Fuel prices stood unchanged for the second week despite violent gyrations in global markets.
The WPI, however, increased by 0.1 per cent to 189.3 points and it was 175.6 points in the previous year.
Market experts said inflation may come down in a few weeks once the full effect of CRR hike takes place.
Reserve Bank hiked the CRR in two tranches of 0.25 per cent each on Net Demand and Time Liabilities of banks with effect from September 18 and October two.
Moreover, they said the OPEC's decision to boost oil supplies by one million barrel per day from November one was expected to take the pressure off from global markets, which could augur well for developing countries.
Government revised upwards inflation to 7.91 per cent for the week ended July 24 as compared to the provisional level of 7.51 per cent.
The WPI stood corrected at 186.9 points during the last week of July as against provisional level of 186.2 points.
