Sharad Pawar denies that WTO was a sell out to West
Monday, August 23 2004 14:59 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar today (Aug 23, 2004) denied that the Ministry was unhappy with the WTO (World Trade Organisation) Framework Agreement and maintained that he had not written any note to the Prime Minister which said India's interests had been sold out to the West.

A newspaper report has created an impression that Agriculture Minister has told Prime Minister that the conclusions arrived at the WTO meeting do not mean much to the country. "This is not correct," he said in a statement.

The report portraying an impression that the Agriculture Ministry was not happy with the agreement was "not at all factual", it said.

Both Agriculture and Commerce Ministers and the officials of the two ministries were fully involved in the preparation for the General Council Meeting in Geneva where the Framework Agreement was adopted on July 31. A Joint Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture was also a part of the delegation to Geneva, it added.
