Wipro sets up China subsidiary; operational by Sep
Friday, August 13 2004 16:53 Hrs (IST)

Shanghai: Wipro Technologies has incorporated a subsidiary in China and set up a 50-seat development centre in Shanghai to strengthen its position in the Asia-Pacific region.

Wipro Shanghai Ltd, the Chinese subsidiary of India's third largest software exporter, will serve as a regional hub for the company's global operations.

"We got a license to do business in China in April and the development centre in Shanghai Pudong Software Park will become fully functional by September," Masaki Nagao President and Representative Director of Wipro Shanghai Ltd said over phone from Japan.

So far the company has invested $200,000 in its China operations. "As our client base in China grows we will expand our development centre in Shanghai or open new centres at other locations," he said.

Initially the focus of Wipro's Chinese subsidiary will be the company's global customers. "We have set up a subsidiary and development centre in Shanghai as many of our global customers wanted to work with us in China too," Nagao, who also heads Wipro's Japanese subsidiary, said.

"Our China operations will also help us focus on the huge domestic market and address the needs of our Japanese customers who have made substantial investments in China," Nagao said.

"As most of our basic research and development work is done in India, the China development centre of Wipro will work on localisation of software and provide implementation and support services," he said.

By opening a subsidiary in China, Wipro joins the league of other software exporters like Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys Technologies who have a presence in China.
