Chennai: The withdrawal limit from the Global Trust Bank (GTB) is likely to be enhanced soon, an indication to this effect was given by the Union Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, today (Jul 28, 2004).

The Government had already relaxed withdrawal of money for education, medical expenses and marriage. "The present Rs 10,000 limit is also likely to be relaxed soon", he told reporters at Chennai airport soon after his arrival from New Delhi.

Asked about reports that some employers were facing problems to withdraw money for payment of salaries, he said that this fact had been brought to his notice. Steps would be taken to ease the situation, he said adding that depositors need to have no fears over their deposits, which was safe.

Replying to another query whether inquiry had been initiated to identify those responsible for the state of affairs in GTB, he said only after a full inquiry "we will be able to say who is responsible".
