Maruti hikes car prices, GM, Hyundai may follow suit Thursday, July 8 2004 23:04 Hrs (IST)

Shortly after the presentation of Union Budget for 2004-05, India's biggest carmaker Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL) today (July 8, 2004) announced an across-the-board price hike marginally by 0.38 per cent and Indian arms of General Motors and Hyundai hinted at following suit.
Price of MUL's bread-and-butter model 'Maruti 800' would go up by Rs 792 at Rs 2.05 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), a company statement said.
The 'LX' model of compact car 'Alto' will now cost Rs 1,026 more at Rs 2.66 lakh.
The price of another premium small car model 'WagonR LX' has gone up from Rs 3.26 lakh to Rs 3.28 lakh, the release said.
The price of premium mid-size car 'Baleno LXi' will be costlier by Rs 2,153, from Rs 5.60 lakh to Rs 5.62 lakh.
The hike in prices follows the announcement of two per cent cess on education in the Budget.
Soon after the Budget, carmakers initiated reviewing the implications of tax proposals.
