India to press for greater market access at WTO Wednesday, June 9 2004 10:12 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
India today (June 8, 2004) said it would press for greater market access and forge its alliance with G-20 developing countries to protect the interest of agriculture and livelihood concerns of farmers.
Coming out of the first meeting of the newly-constituted Cabinet Committee on WTO, Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath said, "Our approach would be that all employment-generating industries in the manufacturing are fully protected so that India became a manufacturing hub."
On agriculture, he said India in coordination with G-20 developing countries including Brazil, China and South Africa, will push for greater market access, elimination of export subsidies and domestic support in the developed countries.
"We want to ensure that all these three pillars are dealt with," Kamal Nath said.
