Monday, May 24 2004 17:57 Hrs (IST)

P Chidambaram, the new Finance Minister of India
New Delhi: In an apparent attack at the NDA's (National Democratic Alliance) "India Shining" campaign, the new Finance Minister P Chidambaram said the new Congress-led coalition Government will pursue "good economics and politics" to ensure all Indians benefited from the reforms started by Manmohan Singh in 1991.

"India must shine for all Indians. To declare India is shining (by NDA government), was in my humble view, mocking at the poor of India," Chidambaram said, adding the poorer section have protested against such a campaign by voting NDA out of power.

In his first press conference after assuming office, Chidambaram said, "We want India to shine. This can happen only through good economics, good politics and hard work."

"I promise, that under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, good economics and hard work. I think we can also promise on behalf of the United Progressive Alliance, that we will bring good and sound politics when we appraise and layout the programmes (Common Minimum Programme) and implement them," he said.
