'Liberalisation to go on, no mindless divestment'
Friday, May 14 2004 16:13 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Congress today (May 14, 2004) said economic liberalisation would continue, but it would not go for "mindless" disinvestment.

"The views of the Congress and its allies will be harmonised on the issue. Disinvestment will continue, but mindless disinvestment will be stopped," party general secretary Kamal Nath told reporters in New Delhi.

Recalling that the Congress had initiated economic reforms in 1991 and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) only continued with it, he said, "Now we will correct aberrations in various sector such as WTO (World Trade Organisation). The aberrations were to the detriment of the people."

Asked if Left parties tried to prevent the Government in the disinvestment process, he said, "I think they do understand the issue because they are also ruling in some States. I don't think the Left parties will be an impediment on it".
