India to discuss BPO backlash issue with Asian nations
Saturday, January 10 2004 10:11 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: India will take up the issue of outsourcing backlash with other Asian countries in the forthcoming Asian IT Ministers' conference in Hyderabad to find out ways to tackle it on a joint effort basis, IT and Communication Minister Arun Shourie said.

"There is backlash to India and other countries from US in outsourcing. In the Asian IT Ministers' Summit, we will discuss ways to strengthen our resolution to tackle it. There will be exchange of ideas and views on that. Why is it that where we get the strength, protection walls are put?" Shourie said at press briefing on the forthcoming summit.

Stating that due to these protective attitudes, WTO talks at Cancun collapsed, he said the opening could not be one-sided.

On the much-hyped data protection laws, Shourie said the IT Department is studying the need and suitability of such a law and states countries like US and Japan still did not have such a law.

The Asian IT Ministers' Summit will see the participation of 45 countries from the Asian region and its agenda includes bridging the digital divide, standardisation and IT development work in Asia, digitisation of culture, construction of broadband network and environment in Asia and Internet affordability, management and security.
