Bangalore: Y Gopala Rao on October 1 took over as the chairman and managing director of the Rs 2,500 crore Defence PSU (public sector undertaking) Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

He succeeded V K Koshy, who retired on superannuation on September 30, according to a company release.

Rao was earlier director in charge of operations of BEL's eight other units located in different parts of the country, the release said.
