Govt to consider outsourcing probe of more companies
Wednesday, September 24 2003 19:34 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Government said on September 24 it would consider outsourcing investigations of more companies after it evaluates the first two such probes of Modi Xerox and Flex Industries.

S K Jain & Co, which had been appointed to probe bribery allegations against the copier major in July 2002, is yet to submit its report while the inspector in the case of Flex Industries has been granted more powers to complete the probe.

The Department of Company Affairs (DCA) would like to outsource more and more investigations if the quality of those in the Xerox and Flex cases were found satisfactory, DCA secretary M K Sardana told reporters in New Delhi.

"We outsourced the Modi Xerox probe by a very competent process....he has examined more than 400 witnesses besides reams of paper. One foreign director is yet to be examined but I expect the report to be submitted soon," he said.

In the case of Flex Industries, seven group companies were being examined for fund diversion and financial mismanagement and the investigator has been conferred powers under section 241 (A) besides 235 to facilitate the probe.

On fresh allegations made by Janata Party leader Subramaniam Swamy about Reliance duping investors, Sardana said the present complaints were very voluminous and the Department was yet to determine the nature of these charges.
