Now, Pak too wants rich nations to cut farm subsidies
Saturday, September 13 2003 11:44 Hrs (IST)

Islamabad: Joining the chorus with India, Brazil and other developing countries, Pakistan on September 12 said it too wants major cuts in farm subsidies of the developed countries as it was the biggest issue of the day.

Without making direct reference to strong objections raised by India and other countries, Pakistan Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan told a meeting of Islamic member countries attending the World Trade Organisation (WTO) conference in Cancun, Mexico, that developed countries should abolish farm subsidies.

"This is our demand with the developed countries that they should abolish the subsidies on agricultural products, being given by them to their farmers and exporters," he was quoted as saying by the official APP news agency.

Khan observed that the view-point of developing countries at the WTO forum was very important for the development of economies of poor nations.

Khan called upon the developed countries to be sensitive to the requirements of developing countries particularly in the agriculture sector and agree on a frame-work that would remove distortions in agricultural trade.
