Telecom row: Shourie for unification of licenses
Friday, August 8 2003 21:00 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: In the wake of a 2:1 judgement given by Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) on August 8 allowing Wireless in Local Loop (WLL) mobile services, Communication Minister Arun Shourie said that "unification of licenses will ultimately resolve the issue once and for all".

"I personally feel that the dispute (cellular Vs WLL) itself and the different judgements actually strengthen the case for universal license. All these problems are arising because licenses are service- specific and technology allows us to do everything," he said.

Commenting on the majority judgement and its directive to government to work out additional license fee to be levied on basic service providers, Shourie said, "We shall consult the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India as directed."

He, however, refused to comment on the dissent judgement given by TDSAT chairperson Justice D P Wadhwa.
