Ban on BPO won’t work for long: US Congressman
Thursday, May 29 2003 15:10 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Speaking at a CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) forum on "Gobalisation and Business Process Outsourcing: Win Win for India and the US", Congressman Jay Inslee, US House of Representatives, emphasized that protectionism is a barrier to healthy trade between any countries.

Referring to the Bills presented in four states in the United States on curbing outsourcing to India, he said, "Government legislations create artificial trade barriers across seas and is not favourable to productivity".

Inslee also said that in recent times, the people of the United States felt threatened by outsourcing and this created anxiety at various levels. On the other hand, they believe in teamwork and have witnessed great productivity in the early 1990s while partnering several countries.

According to him, the Americans are optimistic and have faith in their technical capabilities. In this environment, protectionism in trade is not logically supported in the US. He believed that the knee-jerk reaction from the US people is not going to work for long. However, he advised the Indian community and the business to be observant and sensitive to the issue and continue dialogues at various levels with their US counterparts.
