Bangalore: Targeting corporate businesses, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)
launched in 10 cities on May 24 the MPLS-VPN (Multiprotocol Label Switching- Virtual Private
Networking) service that it said would result in reducing customer networking complexity, costs and
totally do away with the requirement of inhouse technical work force.
The service was simultaneously launched in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi, Ernakulam, Hyderabad,
Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune besides Bangalore.
The service will be quite attractive to corporate offices, banks and financial institutions having business
in all or many of these locations, V P Sinha, director, commercial and marketing, BSNL, said at the
launch function.
Connectivity to locations in other state capitals would also be provided through leased line for enabling
customers to access the nearest MPLS-VPN gateway without any extra cost, he said.
Cost of MPLS network implementation, Sinha said, is "much lesser" than that of a similar leased line
network as the points of presence increases.
The IP VPN service is implemented over a high capacity (155.2 Mbps) dual layer robust MPLS
(multiprotocol label switching) network that has inherent redundancies in routing capabilities, BSNL said,
adding, the network allows complete control over critical parameters like bandwidth throughputs,
latencies and availabilities.
MPLS technology provides a diversified range of services including bandwidth on demand, video
conferencing, voice over IP and a host of other value added services that could "revolutionise" the way
a corporate business works, BSNL said.
Some of the advantages of MPLS-VPN are: highly economical, no maintenance cost; easy scalability;
100 per cent secured connectivity; high capacity transmission; cutting edge technology; pay as per use;
and faster provisioning of network, it was stated.
The company said the service is available in three "customer-friendly" tariff plans of "gold", "silver"
and "best effort".
