Mumbai: Year 2002 closed on a cautiously optimistic note with select shares
registering modest gains in lacklustre trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on
December 31 even as the SENSEX managed to end in the positive terrain with a
marginal rise of 2.31 points at 3,377.28.
The BSE 30 share sensitive index opened slightly better at 3,376.48 and rallied
further to a high of 3,398.1. Later it met with strong resistance and fell back to
the day's low of 3,374.73 before concluding at 3,377.28 as against the previous
close of close 3,374.97.
The broad based BSE-100 index also moved up by 3.63 points to end at 1,664.67 from
the previous close of 1,661.04.
Dealers attributed the listless activity to very low articulation by Foreign
Institutional Investors (FIIs) due to the Christmas vacation.
