No move to privatise profit-making NLC: Bharti
Thursday, December 19 2002 13:31 Hrs (IST)

Neyveli: Coal and Mines Minister Uma Bharti on December 19 categorically ruled out privatisation of the profit-making Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), but said the government would explore possibilities for joint ventures with coal-producing companies for setting up power projects in power deficient states.

"NLC is such a project which will never be privatised," Uma Bharti said while urging workers to contribute their maximum to ensure the company's success.

The minister said she was not against disinvestment and privatisation, but added it should benefit the people.

Dedicating the 210 MW stage-I expansion of the thermal power station-I, she said the lignite major would utilise its expertise in power production while coal companies would bring in their mining expertise to bring about synergies.

Bharti also said the Corporation would soon finalise plans for setting up a 250 MW power and lignite project in Rajasthan.

Speaking on the occasion, coal secretary P K Mishra said NLC should shake off its regional presence and move into other states as lignite reserves were limited.

He said the briquette and carbonisation plant of NLC should be converted into a power plant and asked the company to scout for opportunities in the international arena.
