Bangalore: Software major Wipro has been awarded the 'Ethics is Good Business' award instituted by the Punjab, Haryana, Delhi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) for the Year 2002. The award recognises Wipro's 'ethics and value based' business performance, according to an official press release.

The deputy chairman of Planning Commission K C Pant, presented the award to Suresh Vaswani, president, Wipro Infotech on November 29 in New Delhi.

According to the company sources, Wipro is the first Indian company to articulate a set of beliefs that guided their business conduct, way back in early 1970s. The 'Wipro Values and Promise' form the essence of Wipro, the sources added.

Wipro has compiled an 'integrity manual’, which is derived from the Wipro values and defines the way Wiproites should conduct with their customers, the release said.

Wipro has introduced a Wipro helpline known as 'WIPRO SOS'. This Help line comprises senior members of the company, like chairman Azim Premji, who have helped mould the Wipro values and have influenced the culture greatly. They are always available for guidance on any moral, legal or ethical issues that a Wiproite may face, the release stated.

With a focus on improving the quality of education and thus expand possibilities for children Wipro has launched 'Wipro applying thought in schools' programme. The company is working with teachers, parents, principals and non-governmental organisations to bring about a holistic change in the education system, the release added.
