'Govt mulling waiving of interest on farm loans'
Saturday, November 16 2002 17:54 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Union Agriculture Minister Ajit Singh said on November 16 waiving of interest on farm loans is still being pursued at the government level even though Centre has announced only deferment of recovery of loan and interest.

"Though the deferment of loans cum interest has been announced by the government, complete waiving of interest on loans taken by farmers in the drought-hit kharif season is still pending before the Cabinet and a decision will be taken shortly," Singh said.

Speaking on the sidelines of a seminar on agriculture organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), he said a Cabinet note has already been circulated on waiving of interest on farm loans and reverting fertiliser prices to the pre-Budget 2002 levels.
