India to press EU for removal of import curbs
Monday, October 7 2002 17:02 Hrs (IST)

London: India will impress upon the European Union (EU) to lift "unfair" restrictions on Indian imports at the India-EU summit in Copenhagen starting from October 10, sources confirmed it on October 7.

Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, who embarked on a three-nation trip to Europe on October 7 during which he will attend the summit on October 10 said, he would "push" his European counterparts to scrap "unfair" restrictions on Indian imports including rice, textiles and sugar.

In an interview to 'Financial Times' published on October 7, the Prime Minister said, he would also press to improve access for Indian software engineers to Europe's job market through better visa and work permit policies.

"We believe the EU should show the same commitment to free mobility of professional skills as it has for free movement of goods and services," he declared.

The Prime Minister is visiting Cyprus, Denmark and the United Kingdom.
