HML plans to roll out variants of existing cars
Saturday, October 5 2002 11:58 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: The over Rs 1,600 crore Hindustan Motors Limited (HML) has no plans to launch a new car and it would focus on the existing products and is looking to introduce their variants, a top company executive indicated.

The company's general manager, S Vasudevan, told in Bangalore on October 4 night it is planning to bring out a 1.8 litre variant of Lancer, priced around Rs 11 lakh, in the second quarter of 2003. He noted that the SLX, SFX variants and luxury edition of Lancer had already been launched.

Asked if the company planned to launch a new car, as it has not done so after bringing Lancer, Vasudevan indicated that there are no plans in this regard.

"Our efforts are focussed. One way to approach the market is to introduce a lot of products. We don't want to crowd the dealership with too many products. We will lose focus in the bargain. Dealers normally handle six different products, one or two may suffer," he said.

The company launched 3.2 litre 'Pajero GLX', a sports utility vehicle, (priced Rs 33.8 lakh ex-showroom) in Bangalore city on October 4 night. It has already been launched in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Chandigarh, and Vasudevan said it has already received orders for 32 Pajeros.

"We are looking at selling 25 units of GLX and 40 units of simple Pajero per month in the country," he added.

Vasudevan said the company would launch a 2.8 litre Pajero, prices around Rs 25 lakh, for "lower end" of the market soon.
