'Saras' likely to take to skies in January: NAL
Wednesday, August 28 2002 20:28 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: The much-delayed maiden flight of the multi-role light transport aircraft 'Saras' being developed by the city-based National Aerospace Laboratories is likely to take to the skies in January, a top NAL official indicated on August 28.

"The aircraft is being integrated at NAL and it will be ready by December. First flight is planned early next year," NAL Director B R Pai told reporters after attending a function.

'Saras' is a 14-seater LTA designed for short take-off and landing characteristics, on semi-prepared runways, and low fuel costs. It can also have other applications in the coast guard, aerial surveillance, as an "air-ambulance" and the like, NAL officials said.

Pai also said NAL is developing a four-seater version of 'Hansa', a two-seater all- composite aircraft, which was designed and developed by it earlier.
