First move: Jaswant orders Xerox scam probe
Thursday, July 4 2002 13:45 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: The new Finance Minister Jaswant Singh on July 4 said he has ordered an inquiry into the Xerox Modi Corp scam on the basis of certain documents given to him by the company affairs secretary V K Dhall.

"Yesterday (July 3) company affairs secretary gave me some papers on the basis of which I have ordered an immediate inquiry," he told reporters soon after assuming office.

Singh said, "there might be a few mistakes here and there but it was improper to say all was wrong (with companies)".

The probe into accounts of Modi Xerox was ordered following admission of improper payments of $ 700,000 to government officials in 2000 to promote business.
