IDT offers bids worth $ 5 bn for WorldCom units
Wednesday, July 3 2002 17:12 Hrs (IST)

New York: IDT corp, a leading multinational carrier and telephone company, has made bids worth around $ 5 billion for WorldCom's MFS and brooks fibre units and its MCI consumer and small business long distance units, IDT said.

If successful, IDT said, the acquisition would further enhance its position as a global leader in telecommunications, help preserve the integrity and stability of the US economy and ensure that MCI/WorldCom customers have continued and uninterrupted high quality telecommunications service.

IDT said that it might team up with financial and/or other telecommunications parties for the WorldCom bids it has made.

WorldCom sent world markets reeling last week when it revealed a $ 3.8 billion black hole in its accounts for 2001 and the first quarter of 2002, eclipsing even the Enron scandal.

WorldCom, which is the largest carrier of Internet data and owns MCI, the second- largest US telephone company, has seen its stock price melt and its credit rating plummet, raising fears of a forced liquidation.

Probes are multiplying into the accounting at the firm and some reports suggest that more mis-statements at WorldCom have yet to be revealed.

The company faces a civil fraud investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission and a criminal probe by the justice department.
