Trade unions to meet in Delhi to forge joint strategy
Wednesday, June 26 2002 15:18 Hrs (IST)

Kochi: A joint meeting of various central trade unions would be held in Delhi on July 15 to consolidate their unity and carry forward the unified struggle in support of agreed minimum demands, Hind Mazdor Sabha (HMS) all-India general secretary Thampan Thomas said on June 26.

A recent meeting of nine Central trade unions, including HMS, AITUC, BMS, CITU and INTUC, unanimously decided on a unified struggle to achieve their demands, he told reporters.

The coming meeting would discuss labour laws which were against the interest of the workers, privatisation of profit making public sector undertakings, import policy, unemployment problem, bonus act and interest on provident fund deposits.

The meeting would further strengthen trade unions' unity at the national level, he said, adding it would also help in achieving the aim of a single central union for the workers. This was for the first time that such a joint meeting of various trade unions was being held in the country.

He said all these years HMS had been laying thrust on the need for all trade unions in the country to bury their differences and join hands for a united country-wide struggle against Centre's "anti-people policies".
