Bangalore: Chief Minister, S M Krishna said on May 30 that, "Karnataka was firm on
its decision to shelve the much hyped Elevated Light Rail Transport System (ELRTS)
project".
"The project is not only economically unviable but also cannot reach all parts of
the city,” he told reporters while defending the decision to abandon the ELRTS,
conceived few years ago.
Krishna said immediately after the Congress government headed by him
took charge of the administration, a careful study of the project was made
and the government decided to shelve it. The decision was then communicated to the
Mass Rapid Transit System, the nodal agendy named for the project execution.
Krishna said, the project was also exorbitant and the users cannot afford it.
The government has now suggested to Mass Rapid Transit System authorities, to look
for alternative mode of transport including metro rail to ease traffic congestion in
the city.
The government was also thinking on introducing dedicated lines for operating Volvo
buses.
