WTO heeds to Indian request, sets up new panel
Friday, May 24 2002 18:00 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) has set up a "compliance panel" on India's request against European Union's (EU) decision to review anti-dumping duties on Indian bed linen.

Official sources said that a three-member compliance panel was set up on May 22 under the DSB, which would prepare its report within the next 90 days.

India had requested for setting up of a compliance panel against the initiation of interim review proceedings by EU, saying that the move was not in compliance with the ruling of the appellate body under the WTO.

The appellate body had given a ruling in India's favour in March 2001 and asked EU to suspend the anti-dumping duties on Indian cotton-type bed linen.

New Delhi had also requested the DSB for setting up a panel against changes made by the US in its Rules of Origin.

The case was heard on May 22 in which US objected to the setting up of the panel.

Sources however pointed out that as per the rules, India would make a second request at the next DSB meeting, which will automatically lead to the constitution of a panel.
